If you tested new ATMega maybe you already removed the original one from board.
A good practise wants it to be token away gently, avoiding to bend its pins.
Don't worry if it happens, because you can set it straight with pliers or even with fingers.

Consequentially you have already put new ATMega onto a natural base (socket) to test it, but usually new microcontrollers comes with spacing between pin rows bigger than necessary, so you need to shrink them before.
Again a new suggestion to insure a coherent job.
